A devastating fire erupted at the Ebute Ero market in Lagos State, engulfing multiple shops and leaving traders counting their losses. The blaze, which broke out near the police station adjacent to Carter Bridge, Lagos Island, was reported in the early hours of Saturday.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident in a statement. According to her, the fire raged through the night but was contained by the prompt response of firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Dolphin, Sari-Iganmu, and Alausa stations.
“Their effective management of the situation minimized further damage,” Adeseye stated, crediting the firefighters for preventing the fire from spreading beyond its origin.
While the flames have been extinguished, the aftermath is heartbreaking. Numerous lock-up shops mainly selling tools and kitchenware were completely destroyed, leaving traders battling with untold financial losses.
Adeseye added that efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage.
“As the operation winds down with mop-up exercises, an enumeration is ongoing to determine the number of shops affected and the estimated value of the losses incurred. The investigation to uncover the exact cause of the fire is also being carried out,” she explained.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported, offering a small consolation in an otherwise heartbreaking situation.
This incident follows a worrying trend of market fires in Lagos, with traders repeatedly left to rebuild their livelihoods from ashes, the traders of Ebute Ero market are left to pick up the pieces once again.
