Afrobeats star Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has reached an extraordinary career milestone, becoming the first African artist to surpass 9 billion streams on global music platform Spotify.
The feat includes all of Wizkid’s credited works—ranging from his own singles and albums to high-profile collaborations with international artists.
Leading the charge is his 2016 global smash hit “One Dance”, where he featured alongside Canadian rapper Drake and British singer Kyla. The track alone has racked up a staggering 3.7 billion streams, making it not just Wizkid’s most played song on Spotify but also one of the top 10 most streamed songs of all time on the platform.
In addition, “One Dance” holds the Guinness World Record for being the first track to cross the 1 billion stream mark on Spotify.
Among Wizkid’s solo efforts, his biggest lead single on the platform is the Tems-assisted anthem “Essence”, which currently boasts over 303 million streams and played a pivotal role in introducing Afrobeats to global mainstream audiences.
While American pop star Taylor Swift remains Spotify’s most streamed artist overall with more than 1.5 billion streams, Wizkid’s latest achievement cements his legacy as a true African music powerhouse with undeniable global reach.
