Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has intensified his appeal to the United States for the capability to strike deeper into Russian territory. This comes after the meeting of Ukrainian officials with senior U.S. officials in Washington.
United States has limited use of Western weapons to strike within its soil and in defensive cross-border operations, despite over $50 billion in U.S. military aid since 2022. However, Zelenskiy has been pressing for the removal of the restriction to allow the use of Western aid against Russia.
In his nightly address, Zelenskiy stressed the need to clear Ukrainian airspace of Russian aerial bombs to push Russia towards a peaceful resolution. He called on the U.S., Britain, France, and Germany for both the authorization and provision of long-range missiles and shells.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, who met with U.S. officials and experts over the weekend also mentioned that Russian airfields used for attacking Ukrainian cities are within reach of deep strikes. He expressed hope that Kyiv’s needs for defensive capabilities were understood.
Zelenskiy is scheduled to deliver a detailed plan for victory to President Joe Biden next month and participate in the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who led Kyiv’s delegation, discussed restoring Ukraine’s energy system, noting the impact of a $800 million energy financing package announced in June. Russian strikes have damaged over half of Ukraine’s power infrastructure.
Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, along with Umerov, briefed U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on the battlefield situation, emphasizing the urgent need for weapons from existing defense packages. This comes at the end of a week when Russia launched over 400 missiles and drones at Ukraine.
Bottom Line
President Zelenskiy’s visit to Washington underscores Ukraine’s urgent need for advanced long-range capabilities to counter Russian aggression effectively.
The current aid restrictions and damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure highlight the critical importance of increased support from Western allies to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities. As the conflict continues, securing more comprehensive military assistance and rebuilding efforts will be pivotal in shaping the outcome of the war.
