Have you ever felt an itch around your nipples that just wouldn’t go away? A woman have been dealing with itchy areolas since her teenage years, has somehow found how to put it off for the time being. She typically applies lotion around the area, believing that she’s just suffering from dry skin in that area. But recently, it’s been getting really annoying to have to deal with it at work. It would be so awkward to start scratching at work. Plus, no woman in her family has to deal with a case like this.

Some people think itchy areolas are nothing serious. It might, however, hint at a more serious problem. The idea that itchy areolas are caused by poor hygiene is a widespread misconception. Home Remedies

Moisturizing: The skin around the nipple is like any other skin around our body. They can get dry, itchy and flaky. So you need to keep the nipples and the surrounding skin hydrated. You can use gentle moisturizers that don’t have strong fragrances or chemicals as these components can irritate sensitive skin.

For breastfeeding mothers, using a lanolin-based cream is recommended because lanolin is safe for babies and it helps the skin to get soft and comfortable.

Gentle Cleansing: It’s advised to avoid using harsh soaps and very hot water while cleaning the skin around your nipples and the nipple itself, because these products can strip the skin of its natural oil, making it even more dry. Instead, clean the area with a gentle cleaners and lukewarm water. Also, you need to avoid rubbing your skin dry after washing. Simply pat it gently with a soft towel to prevent any irritation.

Avoid Irritants: Anything that causes you to get irritated in that area needs to be identified and avoided. Also, steer clear of tight clothing that could lead to skin irritation. Instead, buy airy materials like cotton for proper air circulation. Since strong smells and chemicals can cause allergies or irritations, you can use a laundry detergent without fragrance.

Over-the-Counter Relief: Sometimes this itchiness comes with mild redness or swelling of the surrounding skin in that area. In this case, you can try using hydrocortisone cream. This cream can reduce mild itching and inflammation.

However, if your itching is due to certain allergies, taking antihistamines can make the allergic reaction stop and also relieve you from the discomfort. However, make sure to use this cream and prescription exactly as directed, and see a doctor right away if the condition continues.

Conclusion

While some people believe itchy areolas are trivial, the itch may be signs of dry skin, hormonal changes, or allergies. The key to stopping the itch is to figure out what is causing it in the first place and then treating it appropriately. However, if the itch persists, you should see a doctor.
