Homemade Granola Recipe Using Oats

Granola is one of the many crunchy foods that is often eaten for breakfast or as a snack. It is made up of mixed oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Usually, people sweeten it with honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar. You will find granola in things like cereal, or eaten with yogurt, in the form of a yogurt parfait.

One of the common ingredients for granola is oats because they are super healthy, easy to find, and taste better when they are baked. Oats are perfect because they absorb liquids, which helps the whole granola mix to stick together while baking, leaving the granola to be crunchy. As an added bonus, oats have a mild and slightly nutty flavor, which goes well with other ingredients like nuts and dried fruits.

Health Benefits

Fiber: Oats are full of fiber, which is perfect for digestion. It helps the stomach process food and also lowers bad cholesterol. Fiber also helps you feel fuller for a long period of time, so you are less likely to snack too much.

Antioxidants: Oats have antioxidants that protect the body from damage. They also reduce inflammation and protect heart health.

Energy: Oats are made of complex carbohydrates, which release energy slowly. When you eat oats, it gives you steady energy throughout the day, instead of a quick sugar rush or crash.

Ingredients for Crunchy Granola

Base Ingredients
  • Rolled oats
  • Nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans)
  • Seeds (sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds)
Sweeteners
  • Honey
  • Maple syrup
  • Brown sugar
Oils
  • Coconut oil
  • Vegetable oil
Flavorings
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg

Equipment Needed

  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Large spoon

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Before you start mixing anything, turn on your oven and set it to about 350°F or 175°C. This process is called preheating, which allows the oven to be already hot when you put the granola inside so that it bakes evenly. The preheating process usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, so it’s a good idea to do this at the very beginning.

Combine the dry ingredients: In a big bowl, start combining all your dry ingredients. This includes the rolled oats, which forms the base of the granola, and any nuts and seeds you want to add. It could be pumpkin seeds, almonds, or sunflower seeds. You can even add things like coconut flakes or dry fruits later on if you want. Mix these ingredients together gently so that they are evenly distributed. If you don’t mix the dry ingredients first, the oats might end up clumping together during baking.

Mix the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together your wet ingredients. This includes things like honey or maple syrup for sweetening, oil like coconut oil or vegetable oil for moisture, and other flavoring like vanilla extract, salt, and cinnamon.

Combine wet and dry ingredients: Now that both your wet and dry ingredients are ready, pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients. Take a spoon or a spatula and stir everything together until the oats, nuts, and seeds are all coated with the liquid mixture.

Spread the mixture on a baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to avoid the granola from sticking to the pan while baking. Then spread the granola mixture evenly on the sheet, making sure it’s not too thick in any one area. If it’s too thick in one area, the granola won’t cook evenly.

Bake: Put the baking sheet into your preheated oven. Bake the granola for 20 to 25 minutes, but make sure to check on it every 10 minutes. Stir the granola with a spatula every time you check to make sure it is baking evenly and doesn’t burn. You’ll know the granola is done when it turns golden brown or becomes crunchy.

Cool and break apart: Once your granola is done baking, take it out of the oven and let it cook completely on a baking sheet. Don’t touch it while it is hot because it can fall apart. As it cools, the granola will harden and form clusters. Once it is completely cool, break it into pieces or clusters that are the size you like and store in the container.

Bottom Line

Granola is a crunchy combination of oats, nuts, seeds, and sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup. It’s ideal for breakfast or a snack and is extremely nutritious because oats contain fiber, antioxidants, and provide consistent energy. To make it, simply combine the dry ingredients (such as oats and nuts), then add the liquid ones (honey and oil), bake, and cool.
