Court Ruling Shakes Up South Korea Presidential Race

South Korea’s political crisis intensified on Thursday, May 1st as the Supreme Court overturned a ruling that had cleared presidential frontrunner Lee Jae-myung of election law violations, potentially disqualifying him from the June 3 snap election.

The court found Lee made “false statements” during his 2022 campaign, sending the case back to appeals court for sentencing that could bar him from office for five years. The bombshell verdict came hours after Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok resigned, plunging the interim government—in place since December’s martial law crisis—into further disarray.

Acting President Shuffle Continues as Education Minister Takes Helm

With Han’s resignation triggering another leadership change, Education Minister Lee Ju-ho became South Korea’s third acting president since former leader Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment over his failed martial law decree.

The 64-year-old economist immediately ordered military alertness and vowed stability, but the revolving-door leadership has hampered efforts to address U.S. tariff impacts on Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Han, now expected to launch his own presidential bid Friday, had previously been impeached himself in December for refusing to appoint Constitutional Court justices.

The Supreme Court’s unusually swift ruling threatens to upend an election where Lee—leading polls at 38%—had been the clear favorite. Chief Justice Jo Hee-de stated Lee’s false statements “could ruin voters’ judgment,” dealing a blow to the Democratic Party candidate who denies wrongdoing.

While the appeals court could take months to resentence, the verdict already sways undecided voters, according to Myongji University’s Shin Yul. The Democratic Party insists it won’t replace Lee, even as he faces multiple criminal trials beyond this election law case.

Political Instability Grows Ahead of Pivotal June Election

South Korea’s leadership vacuum persists as another acting president takes charge amid economic headwinds and geopolitical tensions. Finance Minister Choi’s abrupt resignation—following renewed impeachment threats over his interim decisions—further destabilized the administration.

With the conservative PPP’s Han Dong-hoon polling at just 8%, the court’s intervention has dramatically reshaped an election already called due to unprecedented constitutional crisis. Observers warn the turmoil risks paralyzing policy responses to global trade pressures and North Korean threats.
