The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) brought before a Federal High Court on Wednesday, Sir Basil Okafor, an ordained Knight of the Roman Catholic Church, and his brother, Edwin Izuchukwu. The two blood relatives were charged with multiple counts of possession of over 2 kilograms worth of heroin and frustration with the course of justice.

According to a statement made by the drug agency, the two suspects were arrested on the 28th of March at their home located at No. 26 Akpomule Street, Isolo-Okota area of Lagos. Also speaking, the prosecution, led by Mr. Umar Hussaine told the ruling judge, Justice Daniel Osiagor that the two relatives were found in direct possession of the hard drug and were later discovered to also be responsible for the distribution of the drug.

The prosecution also accused the defendant of attempting to obstruct the operations of the NDLEA officials participating in the raid, stating that Mr. Okafor threw his phone, an iPhone 7, which contained his information and SIM Card into the toilet. He reminded the court that the crimes committed by the two brothers were prohibited and punishable under Sections 14, 20, 24, and 49 of the 2004 NDLEA Act.

But the defendants both pled ‘not guilty’ once their charges were read and their counsel, Mr. Benson Ndakara asked the court to grant his clients the privilege of bail. This was granted, with Justice Osiagor granting each defendant a bail sum of N2 million, to be made with one surety of the same amount.  However, he also added the stipulation that both suspects would remain under NDLEA custody until their bails were paid.

The case was adjourned till the 5th of October upon which an open trial would begin.
