Tim Turness has assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Apple, taking charge of the technology giant at a crucial point as the company seeks to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence.

Turness succeeds Tim Cook, who served as Apple’s CEO for 15 years and oversaw major changes in the company’s global supply chain and operations. While Cook was recognised for building Apple’s supply network, Turness has spent much of his career focused on hardware engineering and product development.

The 51-year-old executive joined Apple’s design team in 2001 before rising to become senior vice president of hardware engineering. In that role, he led engineering efforts across major Apple products, including the iPhone, which remains one of the company’s biggest sources of revenue.

Tim Turness Takes Over As Apple CEO

His appointment comes as Apple faces growing pressure from technology rivals in the AI space. Although the company remains a major force in smartphones and consumer technology, it has been viewed as trailing competitors in the rapid development and integration of artificial intelligence.

Turness will have little time to settle into his new role. Apple’s annual iPhone launch event is scheduled for September 9, just days after he assumes the top position. The company is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at the event.

Investment analyst Dan Ives of Yorkville Ives & Company said Cook had handed over a company that was in a well-organised position, leaving Turness to determine how Apple approaches its next phase, particularly in AI.

Some analysts had previously suggested that Apple software chief Craig Federighi would be a stronger candidate to lead the company into the AI era. However, Carolina Milanesi of Creative Strategies said Turness’s extensive experience in hardware makes his appointment understandable because consumers continue to place significant importance on physical products when adopting new technology.

Cook also highlighted Turness’s product development skills in his final message to Apple employees, praising his ability to create products capable of having a major impact on people’s lives.

Turness studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania before working as an engineer at Virtual Research Systems. After joining Apple, he became involved in efforts to make the company’s products more durable, dependable and resilient.

He has also reportedly contributed to Apple’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products and manufacturing processes.

His elevation to CEO now represents a major shift in responsibility. Turness has spent decades concentrating on engineering and product development, but his new position will require him to oversee Apple’s entire global business.

Milanesi noted that his background as an engineering leader will now be tested by the significantly broader demands of running one of the world’s most valuable technology companies.

The immediate challenge for Turness will be maintaining Apple’s strength in hardware while accelerating its progress in AI and determining how the company can remain competitive as the technology industry enters a new phase.
