Prof. Zainab Abiola, wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the presidential election on June 12, 1993, has sued the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, in a Federal High Court in Abuja for alleged defamation.

Ibrahim, the IGP’s son, and Teju Moses, a former police orderly, have joined the claim.

Abiola is suing the police for violating her essential human rights to life and dignity as a human being in the suit with reference number FHA/ABJ/CS/2370/202 filed by her lawyer, Tawo Tawo (SAN).

The plaintiff claimed in her statement of claim, acquired by journalists on Sunday, that she was framed on September 20, 2022, by one Ibrahim Alkali, the IGP’s adopted son, and that she inflicted injury on her former orderly, Inspector Moses, which she claimed has harmed her name and reputation.

Abiola’s widow went on to say that since she was humiliated, hauled to court, and condemned by the court of public opinion, her personality and image had been irreparably harmed by defamation and character assassination, lowering her social standing.

Meanwhile, in the summons, Abiola asked the court for a declaration that the police’s actions against her and the other plaintiffs caused her a series of nightmares, as she is constantly afraid for her life.

As a result, the plaintiff urged the court to order the defendants to pay her N100 billion in damages for the police’s defamation, shame, ridicule, harassment, anguish, humiliation, and public embarrassment.

The suit’s hearing date has been set for February 28.
