In his valedictory speech, General Lucky Irabor, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, acknowledged the challenging nature of providing security in Nigeria, but emphasized that it is a goal that can be achieved, sparking controversy among listeners.

During the ceremony held at Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja, Irabor reflected on his tenure, which commenced in 2021 when he replaced General Abayomi Olonisakin, following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, his term as the defence chief concluded on June 19, 2023, when President Tinubu decided to replace all the incumbent service chiefs, including Irabor, with new appointees.

Maj. Gen. C.G. Musa took over as the Acting Chief of Defence Staff, awaiting confirmation by the National Assembly. Irabor, in his valedictory speech, expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by the men and women in the armed forces, noting that their contributions cannot be adequately repaid.

Nevertheless, critically examining his speech, it becomes evident that despite the sacrifices of these individuals, the state of security in Nigeria continues to deteriorate, raising questions about the efficacy of the country’s security agents. The ongoing security threats persist, despite the lives lost in active service, leaving the nation in a precarious position.

Irabor voiced satisfaction with his service in the military, asserting that he leaves behind a stronger armed forces. However, the criticism arises as the outgoing heads of security agencies often laud their own efforts, while the security system itself remains in disarray, burdening the incoming administration with unresolved issues. This instability has deterred many Nigerians and individuals abroad from considering the country as a safe haven.

Nigeria’s current state of affairs places it among the ten most dangerous countries in Africa, with prevalent violent and maritime crimes, terrorism, kidnappings, and civil unrest. The U.S. Department of State issued a level 3 travel advisory for Nigeria due to the escalating crime rates and safety risks within the country. Foreigners and individuals with perceived wealth, particularly, face heightened targeting, especially for ransom kidnappings.

Irabor urged citizens not to undermine the Nigerian military through their actions, emphasizing its role as a beacon of hope, unity, and stability that must be safeguarded. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of his successor to surpass the accomplishments of the armed forces thus far.

The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, former Chiefs of Defence Staff, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori.

Considering all the events that transpired during Irabor’s tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, the assessment of his performance is subject to your opinions.
