There is heightened tension in Enugu State after three residents were reportedly gunned down during a protest in the Coal City metropolis.

According to reports, traders living in the state had taken to the streets on Wednesday morning to protest the closure of their respective shops by the State government, as punishment for not opening for business on Monday, July 24.

Over the course of events, the protest reportedly turned violent, with about three persons allegedly shot dead.

Video clips posted on social media had shown the lifeless bodies of two young men and that of a lady.

The culprit that had fired the shots is still yet to be ascertained but security forces had been deployed to disband the demonstrators.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, for the Enugu State Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, had in a statement issued to journalists, remarked that normalcy had been restored.

Ndukwe had also claimed that the peaceful protest by the traders had been hijacked.
The police spokesperson had then appealed to the traders and citizens alike to remain law-abiding and peaceful while using sanctioned channels to air their grievances.

At the time of writing this report, a full-scale investigation has commenced on the orders of the Commissioner of Police.

Further developments will be communicated as they arrive.
