President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the Nigerian Senate, looking to get approval for a planned military action and other sanctions against the military junta who have taken control of Niger Republic.

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President had read the letter sent by the Nigerian President on the floor of the Upper Chamber on Friday, August 4.

The letter read partly:
“Political situation in Niger

Owing to the unfortunate political situation in the Niger Republic culminating in the ousting of its President, ECOWAS under my governance has castigated the coup in its totality and is determined to return the country to its era of democratically elected government.

In the fight to restore peace, ECOWAS had summoned a meeting and came out with a statement.

The statement had detailed the steps to take to force the military junta in Niger to surrender. The steps include:
Shutdown and monitoring of all the land borders with Niger Republic as well as restoring the border drilling exercise.

Cutting off power supply to the country.

Deploying international support for the implementation of the ECOWAS communique provisions.

The other steps include: preventing commercial and special flights operation to and from Niger, blocking goods and produces on their way to Niger from Lagos and the other eastern seaports, sensitising Nigerians on the import of these decisions on all communication channels, including on social media and last but not the least, a military deployment of personnel for military intervention to enforce the observance of the military junta in Niger should they (military men) remain obstinate.”
