Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, claimed on Friday that foreign mercenaries are behind the upcoming nationwide protest. Sure, let’s blame foreigners to scare Nigerians away from protesting. How typical.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Egbetokun advised Nigerians to think twice before joining any protest. He highlighted that while some groups push for peaceful protests, others mimic Kenya’s violent demonstrations. He emphasized concerns about the sincerity of those promoting peaceful protests with violent undertones.

Egbetokun stated, “We don’t need to look abroad to understand the dangers of protests. Our own EndSARS experience should be enough. We appreciate those who’ve backed out due to the apparent sinister motives. We’ve confirmed fears of foreign mercenary involvement with credible intelligence. Nigerians should exercise caution and reconsider joining any protest group.”

He called on all protest organizers to submit their details to their local police commissioners to ensure a peaceful demonstration. Reflecting on EndSARS, Egbetokun said, “We’ve learned from our past. We agree that citizens have the right to peaceful assembly, but today’s social media calls for violence are alarming. We must build, not destroy, our country.”

Egbetokun assured that the police have taken measures to prevent any law and order breakdown during protests. He urged protesters to cooperate with the police, who will be there to protect them.

“The best option for our country right now is to avoid protests,” Egbetokun said. “It’s just going to set us back, especially those struggling to make ends meet. Any disruption will hurt them the most.”

But really, sir, how sure are you that the pepper seller or the pure water vendor won’t join the protest? Life is tough for them too. Your reasons seem pretty petty when the entire nation is crying out for change.
