Why It Matters

Let’s be real, Nigeria’s performance was nothing short of embarrassing. No medals. Not even one. A big fat zero. It’s a bitter pill for Nigerians to swallow, and it’s hard not to feel let down.

Nigeria wrapped up its participation in the Games without a single medal, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of sports fans across the nation. But, like clockwork, the Ministry of Sports Development is putting on a brave face, vowing to “turn things around and reclaim our sporting glory.”

Sure, the athletes may have failed to bring home any hardware, but the Ministry is spinning this as a positive, claiming that the “performance of our athletes sparked excitement across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas.” Apparently, the spectacle was so gripping that Nigerians were losing sleep just to watch their team fall short.

What They Are saying

In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kehinde Ajayi, tried to rally the troops, saying, “The journey in Paris has lit a fire under us. We’re starting preparations now for the Los Angeles 2028 Games. We’re ready to rewrite history and show the world that Nigeria is still the giant of the black race.”

Ajayi went on to acknowledge the deep disappointment felt by Nigerians over the poor showing, but she insists that under the leadership of Senator John Owan Enoh, the Ministry is poised to “turn the tides and restore our sporting glory.”

She also took a moment to thank President Bola Tinubu for his support, highlighting his “swift approval and release of funds” as a sign that Nigeria has a leader who truly cares about its young athletes.

“We’re grateful to the coaches, technical directors, medics, officials, and athletes who have, despite everything, managed to inspire the next generation. The end of one race is just the beginning of another,” Ajayi added, as if to suggest that maybe next time, things will be different.

Bottom Line

The Ministry is now calling on all Nigerians to “embrace and live in the culture of peace” as they gear up for another shot at Olympic glory in Los Angeles 2028. Because, apparently, peace is what will make Nigeria great again.
