The death toll from a garbage landslide that happened in Uganda’s capital city, Kampala last week has risen to 26. This is as 39 people remain missing, according to the police on Wednesday.
Late on Friday a mountain of garbage collapsed at a landfill site on the outskirts of Kampala, sinking dozens of homes as people slept.
As of Sunday the death toll stood at 21.
Meanwhile, the police have said that more bodies had been recovered since the weekend and an estimate to the number of people missing had been made by interviewing survivors.
The missing persons include 35 local residents and 4 garbage collectors, according to a statement by police, and an excavation work was still in process to try to retrieve those who were missing and or presumed dead.
This landslide had followed heavy downpour that have hit parts of the East African country in recent weeks, provoking extensive flooding and damage.
Residents who live close to the landfill, which has for decades served as Kampala’s only waste dump, have since been complaining about the hazardous waste polluting the environment which posed a danger..
