With the Edo elections just hours away, Kennedy Iyere, the governorship candidate of the Accord Party, has officially withdrawn from the race. He cites ambitions for a higher position that would better enable him to tackle the country’s social and economic challenges.

What They Are Saying

In his withdrawal statement, Iyere expressed that the Edo governorship would limit his capacity to implement his extensive plans for Nigeria. He aims to work more effectively within the federal government to achieve greater success.

He referenced his proposed multi-billion dollar initiative, the “Food4All Initiative,” which he presented to President Bola Tinubu. This program seeks to enhance food security and generate mass employment for youth and women through the “One-Family-One-Farmer Scheme.”

Iyere also noted that internal party conflicts influenced his decision, specifically mentioning a conspiracy involving his running mate, Bright Enabulele, who allegedly attempted to undermine his candidacy.

Despite these challenges, Iyere urged voters in Edo State to remain peaceful and to vote their conscience, emphasizing the importance of equitable power rotation among the three Senatorial Districts.

In his statement, Iyere said, “My focus is no longer on the governorship seat but on a higher portfolio. I want to serve all Nigerians, not just Edo indigenes, and help rebuild Nigeria’s economic strength.”

He added, “Serving as Governor would limit my impact. Recognizing the plots by Enabulele and some Accord Party leaders, I realized it was time to pursue a higher calling at the federal level, where I am already contributing to national development.”

“I am assisting the federal government in creating a roadmap for economic inclusion, self-emancipation, and deradicalization of youths through social intervention programs aimed at reducing unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship among youth and women.”

Iyere plans to launch these programs in October 2024, aiming to set Nigeria back on a path of rapid economic recovery. He anticipates creating over six million youth and women entrepreneurs within the first year, addressing their lack of access to capital for starting or sustaining businesses.

Why It Matters

Iyere’s withdrawal highlights the internal dynamics of elections and the political maneuvering that can influence outcomes. His decision could potentially benefit another party, suggesting the interplay of federal interests in the election.

Bottom Line

As the Edo elections approach, expect intense last-minute strategizing and political maneuvering aimed at fulfilling party mandates. The results will significantly shape the future of Edo State.
