A branch of the Peoples Democratic Party in Katsina State, led by its gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election, Yakubu Lado, elected new leaders during a Saturday congress at the state party secretariat in Katsina.
The Chairman of the Congress, Ilu Bello, introduced Nura Kurfi as the new state chairman of the PDP.
“Based on the constitution, we have the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission here to witness the outcome of our election of the 39 positions, comprising of state, zonal and local government officials” , Ilu commented.
In his acceptance address, Amadi, the new chairman, stated that the new officials will justify the trust placed in them.
“We will repair all shattered walls in the PDP as we take over leadership today, Saturday, August 31, 2024. “We will take over the state in the 2027 general election, God willing,” Amadi promised the crowd.
However, some members of the state’s main opposition, such as Salisu Majigiri, a House of Representatives member representing the Mashi/Dutsi Federal constituency of Katsina and former Chairman of the party in the state, the Chairman of Atiku/Lado 2023 Campaign Director, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri, and the leader of the Lado gubernatorial campaign movement, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, and their supporters, were not present at the congress
A source said that that the three PDP leaders and their followers were not part of the Lado team.
“We are not members of the Lado team. This is why we did not arrive at the venue. We’re not from their camp. “We belong to Mustapha Inuwa,” she explained.
Bottom Line
For the PDP to have a realistic chance of success in future elections, particularly the 2027 general election as aspired by the new chairman Amadi, it will need to address these internal divisions and work towards unity.
The reconciliation of factions and the inclusion of all key stakeholders will be crucial for the party’s stability and electoral prospects.
