Cooper Kruah, Liberia’s telecommunications minister, was fired a few days after attending an opposition gathering, according to President George Weah.
Mr. Kruah is alleged to have attended an opposition Unity Party political gathering last Friday, where the party announced their presidential running-mate ahead of the October general elections.
Senior members of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) party were outraged by the move and demanded that the minister be removed from government.
Worlea-Saywah Dunah, an experienced public worker, has been selected to succeed him by President Weah. His nomination, announced on Monday evening, is awaiting Senate confirmation.
The elections are expected to be highly contested, with the incumbent facing stiff competition from the Unity Party’s Joseph Boaka and the Collaborating Political Parties’ Alexander Cummings.
