Miriam Onuoha, a future member of the House of Representatives, has entered the contest for Speaker of the upcoming 10th National Assembly.
At a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the incumbent House member formally announced her desire to be the speaker.
The first woman to openly register her candidacy for the position is Onuoha, who is running for the Onuimo/Isiala Mbano/Okigwe Federal Constituency in Imo State on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
After Benjamin Kalu of Abia State, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, the lawmaker, who was just elected to a second term in the House, is the second representative from the South-East geopolitical zone to enter the contest.
Onuoha attended the conference with two male House members who are now in office, Messrs. Abdulkadir Abdullahi (APC/Bauchi) and Emeka Chinedu (PDP/Imo), as well as several newly elected lawmakers and members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
