An Embraer 145 aircraft operated by Xejet Airlines encountered an incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos State, veering off the runway and ending up in the grassy area. The aircraft, with 52 passengers and crew members on board, was in the process of landing when the incident occurred.

This incident follows a similar occurrence involving a Dana Air aircraft at the same airport. While the precise cause of the aircraft’s deviation from the runway is yet to be determined, there has been speculation regarding potential factors, including concerns about maintenance practices.

Why it matters

With the recurrence of aircraft skidding off runway paths, Nigerians have raised concerns about the safety of airports and runways. Preventing accidents, particularly on runways, is vital to instill confidence in airlines and air travel.

While one incident may be considered an accident, the occurrence of two similar incidents emphasizes the need for proactive measures to ensure runway safety. A third incident could have potentially dire consequences, underscoring the urgency of addressing runway safety concerns.

What they are saying

Although official comments on the cause of the incident are pending, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has deployed investigators to the scene to determine the cause. Meanwhile, public speculation, particularly regarding weather conditions and aircraft maintenance, is rife.

The recurring nature of such incidents underscores the urgency for thorough investigations and proactive measures to enhance runway safety. Nigerians are rightfully concerned about the integrity of airport facilities and the maintenance of aircraft, urging regulatory bodies to uphold their responsibilities in ensuring air travel safety.

Bottom Line

As investigations proceed and corrective measures are implemented, it is imperative for stakeholders to prioritize transparency, accountability, and stringent safety protocols to mitigate the risk of future accidents. Ultimately, the safety of passengers and crew should remain paramount in all aviation operations.
