The Nigerian police authorities have confirmed that Anthony Joshua’s driver has been charged in relation to the fatal incident that happened in Nigeria involving the heavyweight champion and his team.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged in court at the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court on the last day of the week for his part in the car crash that happened on Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun, Nigeria. With the help of the local district attorney’s office, four counts of charges, death caused by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving with no care taken, and driving without an appropriate driver’s license were presented against him.

The boxer was riding in a Lexus SUV as a passenger when the vehicle hit a truck that was not moving. Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, strength and conditioning coach, were confirmed dead at the roadside. The boxer, who is 36 years old, was later admitted to the hospital with injuries, from where he was discharged the next day after being treated.
The driver was allowed to post bail set at ₦5 million (£2,578), and the next court appearance has been scheduled for 20 January.
The officials, in their official announcement, mentioned that Joshua is “heavy-hearted” with the news of the death of Ayodele and Ghami, who had been very close to him. After being discharged from the hospital, he went to the mortuary where the bodies of his friends were, and he also saw them being repatriated.
Condolences have come from all over the world of boxing, including from promoter Eddie Hearn, who paid tributes to the deceased, describing them as loyal and dedicated.
