Tragedy struck near Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State as bandits attacked multiple communities in Wanke, abducting around 100 residents, including a Chief Imam. According to sources, this marks the second time an imam has been abducted from the area.
A survivor recounted to the BBC Hausa Service that the communities remain under siege, with residents fleeing to escape further attacks.
The survivor explained that in the area near Sabon Layi, over 50 individuals were taken, while another 50 were abducted near Dogon Hayi. The number of missing people is still being counted, as many terrified locals fled for safety.
Describing the attack, he said the bandits chased people like animals, a deeply disturbing sight as residents were forced to abandon their homes. The attackers, mounted on motorbikes, pursued women into their houses, abducting them, while others attempting to escape were intercepted and herded into the bush.
“They attacked the communities of Gira, Ruwa Kusa, Dogon Hayi, and Gidan Kado, stealing motorcycles, farm produce, and mobile phones. Shops were broken into, and provisions were taken,” the source revealed.
It was also reported that the local officials in Wanke were informed of the incident, however there have been no response so far from the unit. Efforts to obtain a statement from the police were unsuccessful, and both the state government and police are yet to respond to the calamity.
