If you’ve been an active internet user for the past few days, chances are that you’ve come across the ‘Best Dressed Female’ controversy currently trending on the major social media platforms in Nigeria.
Right now, the newest twist to the drama is the Nollywood actor, Femi Adebayo, reportedly being invited for questioning over the controversy surrounding the Best-Dressed female award.
Recall that the award in question had been given to controversial Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okunneye, aka Bobrisky by Adebayo.
Shortly after the award was given to Bobrisky, Dayo Amusa, aggrieved and frustrated with the turn of events, took to Instagram and on a live session on her page, addressed the controversies over the award —a spectacle that has now generated an online fight.
On Wednesday, the drama snowballed as Amusa announced that Adebayo had been summoned by the police and Muslim community for promoting LGBTQ in Nigeria.
The movie star had also slammed Adebayo’s wife for her claims that she [Amusa] was envious of her husband’s career, labelling such thought as shallow-minded.
According to Dayo, added that Adebayo’s wife, Aladuke, had the right to defend her husband but she was not allowed to insult her while she was doing so.
This ‘Best Dressed Female’ award saga has now evolved into a spectacle of controversy, (a scenario I’m certain that the organisers did not see coming).
Femi Adebayo’s alleged summons by police officials over the award begs the question: “Is there really a freedom of expression in Nigeria?”
The fact that the award was bestowed upon Bobrisky, a public figure known for challenging gender norms, further amplifies the tensions and stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria.
How far is this controversy going to spiral?
