What many people saw as speculation has now turned into a direct admission, after Bill Gates openly described his association with Jeffrey Epstein as a “huge mistake,” while addressing staff at his foundation.

The disclosure, which surfaced through reports reviewing a recording of an internal town hall, has again placed the Microsoft co-founder under intense public discussion. Gates acknowledged errors in judgment but firmly denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities.

Admission That Reignites Old Questions

During the staff meeting at the Gates Foundation, Gates did not attempt to soften his words. He admitted that spending time with Epstein and involving foundation executives in meetings with him was a serious misstep.

Bill Gates Finally Admits ‘Huge Mistake’ with Jeffrey Epstein

“It was a huge mistake to spend time with Epstein,” Gates said, adding that he regretted how the relationship affected the reputation and work of the foundation.

He also apologised to colleagues who were indirectly drawn into the controversy, signaling recognition of the wider impact beyond his personal decisions.

Affairs Acknowledged, Allegations Rejected

Beyond the Epstein connection, Gates confirmed he had two affairs, both involving Russian women.

According to his remarks, one relationship was with a Russian bridge player he met at bridge events, while the other involved a Russian nuclear physicist encountered through business activities.

However, Gates strongly pushed back against claims contained in documents released by the US Justice Department. In a draft email cited in those materials, Epstein had alleged that Gates engaged in questionable behaviour.

Gates rejected those suggestions outright.

“I did nothing illicit. I saw nothing illicit,” he told foundation staff.

Timeline of the Relationship

Gates stated that his interactions with Epstein began in 2011, years after Epstein had already pleaded guilty to soliciting a minor.

He admitted awareness of certain travel restrictions placed on Epstein but acknowledged he did not conduct deeper background checks at the time.

Gates also revealed that his then-wife, Melinda Gates, raised concerns about Epstein in 2013. Despite this, Gates continued to have contact with Epstein for at least another year.

Looking back, Gates conceded that what later became known about Epstein made those decisions “a hundred times worse.”

Impact on the Gates Foundation

A central theme of Gates’s remarks was not just personal regret, but institutional consequence.

He acknowledged that his association with Epstein created reputational challenges for the Gates Foundation, an organisation built around philanthropy, global health, and development initiatives.

By apologising internally, Gates appeared to address lingering unease among staff and stakeholders.

The Gates Foundation did not immediately issue a public response regarding the reported statements.

Why This Still Matters

While Gates maintains he had no involvement in criminal conduct, the admission reinforces how even indirect links to controversial individuals can carry lasting consequences.

Bill Gates’s decision to openly describe his Epstein relationship as a “huge mistake” is an eye-opener to a story that has circulated for years. His acknowledgment of personal affairs and rejection of wrongdoing aim to separate poor judgment from criminal implication.
