A boat accident has killed about 21 people at Imore town in the Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.
From the reports gagered, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday in Lagos, had narrated how the police received a distress call about the accident on Monday, where two unregistered passenger boats -both of which had 16 passengers onboard- collided in the middle of the lagoon at Imore Town.
Hundeyin added that boats in the process capsized and the passengers drowned with the goods. Emergency responders had quickly stormed the scene upon hearing of the incident and 11 people got rescued.
“Teams of conventional/marine policemen, local divers, and other emergency responders were swiftly mobilised to the scene where 11 of the passengers were rescued with injuries,” Hundeyin stated.
He also added that the injured were rushed to Navy Hospital, Navy Town, Alakija, for medical attention, while search and rescue operations were escalated in a bid to recover the victims’ bodies.
Finally, he revealed that investigation had begun into the matter.
