Crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, may be heading into even deeper legal waters now, with new reports appearing to hint at fresh waves of criminal charges against him. Hardly some months after his release from detention, it was reported that Bobrisky may soon be grilled on charges of defamation and bribery over his recent incarceration.
The drama had started when social critic VeryDarkMan dropped a voice note, which he claimed captured Bobrisky in an admission that he had given EFCC men N15 million as a bribe to wriggle out of a money-laundering case. Bobrisky is also said to claim that he bribed Nigerian Correctional Service officials and was serving his six months in a private apartment rather than at Kirikiri Custodial Centre.
The investigation panel, in turn, recommended possible criminal charges if the allegations proved true, maintaining that Bobrisky must be brought to book for denting the good image of the correctional service. The panel further called on the Department of State Services to investigate the bribery claims, with a focus on whether corruption actually occurred directly or through intermediaries. Four prison officials have been flagged for possible disciplinary actions concerning the case.
In a rather unexpected turn, the very sensational Bobrisky saga has been blown into an international sensation and is soon going to be the subject of an academic discussion. A leading American university has now associated itself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science to make a case study on Bobrisky at an upcoming symposium titled “Being and Becoming Bobrisky,” on November 2, 2024.
As the court cases involving Bobrisky continued to make headlines, he had remained a controversial character whose story had been told not only in Nigeria but the world over.
