Born With Two Vaginas? Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Uterus Didelphys
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Uterus didelphys is a rare anatomical variation where a woman has two separate uteri. “Uteri” is the plural form of “uterus,” and the uterus is the organ in a woman’s body where a baby grows during pregnancy. Thus, if a woman is said to have two uteri, it means she has two of these organs. This poses the question of how many vaginas such a woman would have.

However having two uteri doesn’t necessarily mean that the woman would have two vaginas. Some women with this condition might have a single vagina, while others might have two. This condition varies from person to person. In this article we’re going to learn about the unique aspects that come with having two uteri.

What is Uterus Didelphys?

As said earlier, uterus didelphys is when a woman has two separate uteri instead of one. Normally, the uterus forms from two tubes, called Müllerian ducts, that come together and fuse into a single uterus. This fusion happens in the early stages of pregnancy when the baby is still developing in the womb. In uterus didelphys, these ducts don’t fuse, so uteri form instead. Usually, each uterus has its own fallopian tube and ovary on its side, and they share a single cervix.

However, it’s possible for there to be two vaginal openings in some cases of uterus didelphys. This happens because the müllerian ducts sometimes stay separate all the way down to the vagina. This can create two separate vaginal canals. So, a woman with a uterus didelphys might have two uteri, each with its own cervix, and two vaginal openings. However, it’s also possible for her to have just one vaginal opening. It varies because everyone develops a little differently.

Common Questions People May Have

Is uterus didelphys a medical condition? No, it’s just a normal variation in how the body develops.

Will it affect my fertility? Usually not. But if you have concerns, talk to your doctor.

Are there any symptoms? Most people don’t have symptoms, but some might get unusual period cramps.

How is it diagnosed? Doctors can see it on a prenatal ultrasound or during tests for fertility.

Does it require treatment? No, unless there are complications during pregnancy.

How does this affect the menstrual cycle? Having uterus didelphys can affect your periods in a few ways. Since there are two uteri, you might have heavier bleeding because each uterus can have its own cycle. This could also make your periods irregular sometimes.

Some women with this condition might also feel more cramps during their periods because both uteri contract. And if you have two vaginal canals, you might need to use tampons or pads differently to handle the flow from both.

Pregnancy with Uterus Didelphys

If you have uterus didelphys, you can get pregnant in either of your two uteri because each one can carry a baby.

There’s a slightly higher chance of some issues like the baby being breech (feet first or buttocks first during childbirth) or being born early. But as long as you get regular check-ups and take good care of yourself during pregnancy, most women with uterus didelphys have successful pregnancies and healthy babies.

Conclusion

Uterus didelphys is a rare but natural variation where a woman has two separate uteri instead of the usual single one. It doesn’t typically cause symptoms and usually doesn’t affect fertility.
Women with this condition can still get pregnant in either uterus, though there might be a slightly higher risk of certain pregnancy complications like breech presentation or preterm birth. With proper medical care during pregnancy, most women with uterus didelphys can have successful pregnancies and healthy babies.
