Popular Sopurum Hotel, located in the Nkwelle-Ezunaka community, Onitsha, Anambra State, has just been gutted by fire.
According to reports, the incident had occurred in the early hours of Monday, July 3. A significant part of the hotel structure was gutted in the fire.
As of the time of writing this report, fire service personnel from Anambra State and Delta State are currently at the scene, fighting to control the situation.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman for Anambra State had confirmed the fire incident to Channels TV, stating that the situation was presently under control.
In his words:
“The fire began at about 4:30 am on Monday, July 3, and when the cry for aid had come in, our men were quickly dispatched to the scene. The area has been cordoned off to avoid any reports of vandalism.”
The Soprom Hotel owner is fortuitous that the firefighters had arrived in time. Anambra State is notorious for not having a working fire service station. This has led to several fire outbreaks destroying goods and properties worth millions of Naira in the state due to a delayed arrival to the scene, to combat the fire.
Ochanja Market in Onitsha has suffered greatly as a result of this ineptitude.
Hopefully, incidents like these will be quickly attended to just as was done for Soprum Hotels.
No death has been confirmed as of this time.
