The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has voiced dissatisfaction with INEC over how the elections for the National Assembly and the presidency were handled.
Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the archbishop of Owerri and president of the CBCN, accused the commission of failing Nigerians despite repeated assurances and a resolve to hold free, fair, and credible elections in a statement released yesterday.
They exhort INEC to act quickly and appropriately to solve the problems at hand to ease the tension and advance the interests of society. No matter how long it takes, INEC must make sure that it takes the proper action straight away to ensure that the sacredness of the electorate’s collective will is not breached and to regain the public’s trust in our country and its institutions.
Thus, the Catholic Bishops urged all Nigerians to maintain their composure, uphold the law, and be ardent in their prayers.
They specifically encourage political party leaders to maintain patience while we all give INEC the chance to demonstrate that it is still deserving of our faith. Nigeria is currently perched on the brink of disaster; INEC must conduct itself ethically to prevent pushing the country into a preventable crisis.
