Environmental sustainability involves the use of Earth’s resources in a way that ensures their long-term health while minimizing environmental impact. It’s like ensuring that we don’t deplete all of our resources and destroy the environment for our children and grandchildren. Today, there is a growing worldwide concern about the environment, with individuals from all over the world pushing for more sustainability. This increase in awareness can be related to various disturbing data on environmental issues.

According to best insights from top research papers, Scispace says that, “in 2022, global plastic waste generation was reported to be around 380 million tonnes, compared to 353 million tonnes in 2019.” Even if environmental sustainability is becoming more and more recognized, it’s interesting to think about why this idea wasn’t prioritized in the past. Thus, the purpose of this essay is to define environmental sustainability and discuss how it has grown in significance.

The Highlight of Environmental Challenges on Condition

The average global temperature in January 2024 exceeded previous records, making it the warmest January on record. For the tenth consecutive month, ocean temperatures were likewise at a record high. This was influenced by El Niño conditions, which are expected to change to neutral conditions by mid-2024, possibly leading to La Niña.

El Niño and La Niña are climate patterns that affect a region’s rainfall and drought. El Niño occurs when sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean rise above average. This warming of ocean waters hinders the flow of air masses, resulting in weakened trade winds.

Let’s consider it this way: Trade winds are consistent breezes that blow east to west around the equator. They act as conveyor belts in the atmosphere, moving warm air and moisture around the Earth. When we talk about weakened trade winds, we mean that they aren’t as strong as they usually are. During El Niño, when the Pacific ocean warms above average, trade winds may weaken or reverse direction temporarily. This disrupts normal weather patterns, generating heat waves and dry spells in various places.

La Niña is the reverse of El Niño, which occurs when the Pacific Ocean becomes cooler than normal. This brings a lot of rain, and some areas can become severely flooded.

Human Activities That Trigger Change in Temperature

Human actions can alter the factors that impact the intensity and frequency of heat waves. These activities include the following:

Greenhouse Gas Emissions: When we burn fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas, we emit gasses such as CO2 into the environment. These gasses trap heat and cause global temperatures to rise. Warmer temperatures can impact the ocean’s surface temperature, influencing the development of El Niño and La Niña.

Deforestation and Land Use: Trees are like natural air conditioners. They help to keep the atmosphere cool and regulate the amount of moisture in the air. Cutting down these trees for farming or creating cities disrupts the ecological balance. Changes in the landscape can affect how heat is absorbed and released into the air. This can disrupt pressure and wind patterns, affecting El Niño and La Niña.

Ocean Pollution: Pollution in the waters can disrupt marine life and alter how the water travels. Not only that, but contaminants such as plastic can trap heat, warming the water. Ocean currents impact surface water temperature and are linked to El Niño and La Niña events.

The Solution

  • Use clean energy like sunlight and wind to reduce pollution and slow down global warming.
  • Save energy by using less at home, at work, and when driving to save money and help the environment.
  • Protect nature when farming and cutting trees by doing it in ways that keep soil healthy and animals safe.
  • Reduce waste by recycling paper, plastic, and glass, and composting food scraps to keep landfills smaller.
  • Work together to take care of the environment and make the world healthier for everyone, now and in the future.

Conclusion

A circular economy is all about utilizing resources properly. Instead of discarding items after use, we look for methods to repurpose or transform them into something different. This helps us reduce waste and saves the environment. Let us keep a look out for innovation and new technologies, which are important since they enable us to devise ever more efficient ways to use resources and eliminate waste.
