The Lagos State Government has developed a comprehensive traffic management system to ensure free traffic movement along the Lekki-Ajah corridor ahead of the Dangote refinery’s start of operations, distribution, and lifting of refined petrol to outlets on Sunday.
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, issued a statement on Saturday reaffirming the state government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ welfare and maintaining orderly traffic.
He affirmed that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has been strengthened with cutting-edge equipment and qualified staff that would be strategically placed to monitor and regulate traffic flow in the impacted regions.
Giwa reassured residents and commuters in the Lekki-Ajah area that proper preparations had been made, and urged them to be calm and faith in the state government’s ability.
The statement said, “In conjunction with important partners, LASTMA has mobilised advanced tow trucks and emergency response equipment to rapidly manage anticipated potential traffic problems. Medical ambulance services are also on high alert to provide a timely response in emergency situations.
“As the Dangote Refinery begins operations, the Lagos State Government emphasised the importance of strict respect to traffic laws by tanker operators, particularly during loading and navigation in the Lekki-Ajah axis.
The state administration will strictly enforce these laws to prevent traffic jams and ensure smooth vehicular movement.
“The Lagos State Government reiterates its commitment to protecting citizens’ well-being and preserving orderly traffic during this critical period of industrial activity.
“All motoring public, particularly commercial bus operators and minibus drivers, are hereby cautioned to comply with traffic laws, including refraining from picking up or dropping passengers at undesignated bus stops, avoiding driving against traffic (one-way drive), and obeying all road signs and traffic signals, among other regulations.
“Adherence to these regulations will ensure a harmonious and efficient transportation system.”
In Essence
The appointment of a dedicated special adviser for transportation and the reinforcement of LASTMA with advanced equipment demonstrate the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient traffic flow.
The assurance of medical ambulance services on standby is reassuring and reflects the government’s concern for the safety and well-being of residents.
The strict enforcement of traffic laws, particularly for tanker operators, is essential to prevent congestion and ensure the safety of all road users.
The Lagos State Government’s appeal to motorists to adhere to traffic regulations is crucial for the success of these measures.
By avoiding illegal practices such as picking up or dropping passengers at undesignated bus stops, driving against traffic, and disregarding road signs, motorists can contribute to a more orderly and efficient transportation system.
