Florence Otedola, better known as DJ Cuppy, has discussed her privileged upbringing, saying that she was previously ignorant of her family’s immense riches.
On Saturday, she posted a touching remark on X (previously Twitter), describing how her upbringing shielded her from financial troubles and made luxury seem ordinary.
Cuppy stated that, over time, she has come to appreciate the extent of her privilege and now cherishes the life she once neglected.
She wrote, “Growing up, I didn’t fully realise just how privileged I was. I never had to worry about anything tbh. Thank God I see it now. What felt normal to me is something someone else is praying for. Gratitude changes everything.”
DJ Cuppy is the daughter of Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola. Her father is a well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist with investments in the oil and energy sector. Despite being born into wealth, Cuppy has often expressed her desire to build her own legacy.
She began her career as a DJ before expanding into music production and philanthropy. Over the years, she has released several singles and collaborated with both Nigerian and international artists. She is also the founder of the Cuppy Foundation, which focuses on various charitable causes, including education and child welfare.
Cuppy has an impressive academic background. She graduated from King’s College London in 2014 with a degree in Business and Economics. She then pursued a master’s degree in Music Business at New York University (NYU) in 2015. In 2022, she earned another master’s degree in African Studies from the University of Oxford.
Despite her privileged background, Cuppy has often spoken about the challenges of being a wealthy person’s child. She has shared that people sometimes assume her success is solely due to her father’s influence rather than her own efforts. However, she continues to push forward in her career, aiming to make a name for herself beyond her family’s wealth.
Cuppy’s latest reflection on privilege adds to her history of candidly discussing personal growth and self-awareness. By acknowledging how her upbringing shaped her perspective, she hopes to inspire others to appreciate their own blessings, regardless of their circumstances.
