The Department of State Services, DSS, on Monday, January 30 revealed that its officers have apprehended an undisclosed number of persons involved in the sale of the new naira notes.
The spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunanya had in a statement released on Monday, 30 January, accused certain commercial bank officials of allowing the crime.
The statement titled, ‘DSS intercepted syndicates selling new currency notes, bank official implicated’ reads in part:
“The Department of State Services wishes to inform the public that it has intercepted a few members of organized syndicates involved in the sale of the newly redesigned naira notes. In the course of its operations, in this regard in parts of the country. It was also established that various commercial bank officials were aiding the economic malfeasance.”
“Consequently, the Service warns the currency racketeers to refrain from this ignoble act. And the appropriate regulatory authorities are, in this same vein, urged to ramp up monitoring and supervisory activities to expeditiously address the emerging trend.”
