A devastating road accident in central Mexico has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 21 people, according to a local government official. The fatal three-vehicle crash occurred on the highway between Cuacnopalan and Oaxaca in Puebla state on Wednesday morning, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Samuel Aguilar Pala, a local government official in Puebla, reported that the deadly road accident claimed the lives of 18 individuals at the crash site. Tragically, an additional three people succumbed to their injuries later while receiving medical treatment in hospital.
Mr. Pala conveyed this information and stated that several other individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention via a post on social media platform X.
Initial reports from local media outlets revealed that the fatal three-vehicle crash involved a tanker truck, a passenger bus, and a transport van. The collision on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway resulted in significant damage and casualties, highlighting the dangers of highway travel in the region.
According to the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, the catastrophic highway crash unfolded when a cement truck attempted to overtake a van. During this overtaking maneuver, the cement truck reportedly crossed into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a passenger bus.
Subsequently, the out-of-control truck then crashed into a transport van before careening into a ravine below and erupting into flames, as detailed by La Jornada.
A video shared on social media by a local journalist depicted a large plume of dark smoke billowing from the ravine, the apparent location of the fiery crash.
The footage also showed a significant section of roadside railing that had been torn away, indicating the force of the deadly collision. However, the authenticity of this video has not been independently verified by the BBC.
Why It Matters
This tragic incident adds to a concerning pattern of severe accidents on highways throughout Mexico in recent years.
In February of this year, a particularly devastating bus crash in Tabasco, located in southern Mexico, resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, showing the need for improved road safety measures and increased vigilance on Mexican highways.
The circumstances surrounding the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway crash will likely be subject to investigation to determine the exact cause and prevent future tragedies on Mexico’s roads.
