The Federal Government has established four electronic toll stations on the 260-kilometre Abuja-Keffi-Makurdi expressway to pay back a $460.8 million loan from China Exim Bank.
David Umahi, the Minister of Works, shared this information in Abuja, noting that the toll system follows the rules set by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).
Umahi explained, “The road is 260 kilometres long and has two lanes, so it’s like having 520 kilometres of road. I believe there are only four toll stations on this road.”
The Abuja-Keffi-Makurdi expressway, constructed by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) using the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction–Finance (EPC+F) model, is finished, but the toll stations are not yet in use.
This project, which is part of the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), also includes important services like security posts, supermarkets, and clinics along the route.
The $542 million project was funded with a $460.8 million loan from China Exim Bank, which covered 85% of the total cost. The Nigerian government paid the remaining 15%.
China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) will oversee the toll stations to repay the loan.
