After months of delay, the Federal Government has promised to pay the backlog of the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The assurance came from the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

Corps Members to Receive Backdated Payment

The Federal Government increased the monthly stipend for corps members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000 in September 2024. However, despite repeated promises and growing public criticism, the new allowance has yet to be disbursed.

Minister Olawande confirmed that all serving corps members, including those in the scheme when the increment was announced, will receive backdated payments.

“You saw the new DG saying that you will get it, and they’re asking him a question, ‘What about those that are going out now, are they going to receive it [backlog]?’ He said, ‘We have your details,’” the minister stated.

“The backlog, we will work on it and make sure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” Olawande assured.

Ongoing Concerns Over Delayed Payment

The delay in implementing the new allowance has sparked frustration among corps members, with many expressing concerns about the rising cost of living. The promise to clear the backlog comes after mounting pressure on the government to fulfill its commitment.

Although no specific timeline was provided, the Minister’s statement suggests that the government is working to address the issue.

What This Means for Corps Members

The payment of the backlog would provide much-needed financial relief for corps members who have been waiting since the allowance increase was announced. It also signals the government’s acknowledgment of the critical role NYSC members play in national development.

As corps members await further updates, the Federal Government’s latest assurance offers a glimmer of hope that the long-standing payment issue will soon be resolved.
