According to Mr. Shehu Mohammed, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC’s) Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) for the FCT and Niger, 80% of road traffic collisions (RTCs) in all 36 of the nation’s states, including the FCT, are the result of human error.

Mohammed made this statement during a Tuesday interview in Abuja with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He claimed that the main contributors to RTCs in the nation were people, machines, and the natural environment.

He added that illegal drug and alcohol usage, poor vision, and speeding were all contributing factors to the country’s high rate of traffic accidents.

Mohammed claimed that since humans often operate machinery, human mistake was a factor in roughly 80% of RTCs.

Mohammed said that bad vehicle maintenance was sometimes a result of human mistakes, stressing the importance of routine and periodic maintenance by the vehicle’s owner or driver.

Mohammed asked drivers to pay more attention to traffic signs and added that to avoid collisions, drivers should utilize defensive driving strategies such as scanning the roads and taking other users of the road into account.

The FRSC boss reaffirmed that the corporate strategic goal of the corps for the year 2022 is to reduce traffic accidents and the resulting fatalities by 2%.
