3 persons in Ondo state southwest Nigeria have received death sentences as the court finds them guilty of the murder of Funke Olakunrin three years ago. Funke was the daughter of Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The suspects were sentenced by Justice Williams Olamide at the State High Court, yesterday, 10 June. Mrs. Olakunrin was killed after gunmen attacked her at the Benin-Ore road in June 2019 and her death sparked a lot of talk on the issue of insecurity in the country on social media then.
The gunmen, Adamu Adamu, Awalu Abubakar, and Muhammed Shehu were found guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping, and murder by Justice Olamide. However, the fourth suspect, Auwala Abubakar was discharged and acquitted by the Judge. Mrs. Olakunrin’s second daughter, Feyisike Omosehin, reported that the family was very happy that justice had been served at long last additionally praising Amotekun, the Nigerian Police, and the state government for their efforts in bringing the culprits to book. The daughter further revealed that her mother would have turned 61 on June 11 but she was nonetheless, happy that her killers were brought to book before her posthumous birthday.
Also Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization hailed the decision of the court. The spokesperson for the group, Jare Ajayi has said that the group was happy that the killers have finally reaped the consequence of the evil they committed three years ago, even though the court case took several years. Mrs. Funke Olakunrin was kidnapped at the Benin-Ore Expressway in June 2019 along with several people. She later died after she was rushed to the hospital following her release at the hands of the kidnappers.
