On Friday, armed assailants seized Mohamed Fouani, head of the electronic distributor Fouani Group, along with at least two others, during a deadly ambush in Ikoyi, Lagos. This information comes from sources familiar with the incident.

Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin told Peoples Gazette on Saturday afternoon that he had not been briefed on the attack but confirmed that an investigation had already begun to unravel the situation. Multiple sources indicated that the incident occurred near Falomo Bridge.

The incident would likely unsettle the command, which had previously prided itself on maintaining low levels of kidnap-for-ransom activities across the state, in contrast to their spread in other parts of the country.

Ikoyi’s Security Assumptions

Ikoyi, home to many expatriates and diplomats in Nigeria, particularly in its high-end neighborhoods, had long been considered secure and relatively free from such breaches by motivated assailants. This incident challenges those security assumptions.

Fouani Group and Business Impact

Fouani Group, led by Mohamed Fouani and other prominent Lebanese businesspeople, is the major distributor of LG and Hisense products in Nigeria. As of now, the company has not stated the incident.

Ransom Demand

Sources revealed that the abductors have contacted individuals close to the victims, demanding a ransom of $1.5 million. The Gazette could not independently verify this demand or confirm its origin.

Bottom Line

The abduction of Mohamed Fouani and others highlights growing security concerns in Lagos, particularly in areas previously deemed safe. The ongoing police investigation and the substantial ransom demand underscore the seriousness of the situation, prompting a reevaluation of security measures for high-profile individuals in the region.
