American rapper A$AP Rocky has disclosed that his mother, Renee Black, had long hoped he would eventually end up in a relationship with global music star Rihanna.
Speaking in a recent interview on the New York Times Popcast, Rocky revealed that his mother frequently nudged him toward Rihanna, even at a time when he believed their relationship was strictly platonic.
According to the rapper, he initially dismissed her comments, convinced that Rihanna had no romantic interest in him and insisting that they were merely friends.
Reflecting on the situation, Rocky admitted that his mother’s intuition proved correct, as events eventually aligned in their favour.
“My mother used to say I know you like this girl that you are with right now (I am not going to say any names), but I want you with Riri. I used to be like ‘mum, why do you keep saying that? That girl does not even want me like that. Be cool, she is just my friend’,” he said.
He added that the timing played a crucial role in their eventual relationship.
“Mothers know best and I am thankful that she was put in my life at that time because I think anytime prior to that, I do not think I was ready for something like that.”
A$AP Rocky and Rihanna’s relationship evolved from a long-standing friendship into a romantic partnership in late 2020.
The couple welcomed their first child in May 2022, followed by their second son, Riot Rose, in August 2023. Their family further expanded in September 2025 with the birth of their third child, Rocki Irish Mayers.
