Frankly, if we’re being truthful to ourselves, we’d accept that Nigeria doesn’t have a traditional “summer” season like we see in the US or Europe. We’re a tropical country and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, when the world starts buzzing about summer vacations, beach trips, and seasonal trends, how do we join the conversation without sounding out of touch?

We simply adapt.

In Nigeria, our peak hot season (February to April) and rainy season breaks (August “August break”) give us our own version of “summer energy.” So, let’s talk about how to make the most of it but with the Nigerian flair.

How to Enjoy the Summer Vibes in Nigeria’s Tropical Climate

Body Care

Skincare for Scorching Weather

– Switch to lightweight moisturizers (try Cerave PM or Neutrogena Hydro Boost).

– Sunscreen is non-negotiable, even when it’s cloudy. Black Girl Sunscreen or Sun Bum works great for melanin-rich skin.

– Face mists won’t fail you, especially during summer. Therefore, keep a rosewater spray (Mario Badescu or local Zaron Rosewater) in your bag.

Haircare for Humidity

– Opt for braids & wigs. Ditch the leave-outs (unless you enjoy having hair frizz).  Some anti-humidity products that could be your best friends are the Doux Mousse or Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In.

Style Hacks for Summer

– Wear breathable fabrics such as linen, cotton, and loose silhouettes. In addition, make open-toe shoes your best friends this season and let your feet breathe.

Nigerian “Summer” Activities (No Beach Required)

If your aiming for “Staycation Energy”, then these are your sure spots:

  • For Rooftop Pools: Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Radisson Blu Lagos.
  • For Resort Vibes: La Campagne Tropicana, Whispering Palms.

If you’re more of an “Outdoor Vibe” person, then check these out:

  • Park hangouts: Lekki Conservation Centre, Millennium Park Abuja.
  • Night markets & food fests: Eko Food Fest, Kalamanda Market.

Consequently, there are rainy season “Summer” Alternatives” because, you know, we’re still in the rainy season – just in case:

  • Indoor picnics (because August downpours won’t ruin your vibe).
  • Movie marathons (Nollywood flicks plus popcorn).

Nigerian-Friendly “Summer” Trends to Try

1. Makeup: try out the “clean girl aesthetic” for a more natural look.

2. Food & Drinks; Zobo slushies (blend zobo with ice), grilled plantain & fish (for the Nigerian version of “summer BBQ”).

In addition, if you want to feel like you travelled overseas, without leaving the shores of the country, try these nice and scenic alternatives

For beach alternatives: Tarkwa Bay (in Lagos State), Ibeno Beach (in Akwa Ibom).

For cool highlands: Obudu Mountain Resort, Mambilla Plateau.

In Conclusion

Whether you’re surviving the heat, making the most of “August break,” or just stealing summer trends for your Lagos lifestyle—own it!

I’m curious dear reader, how do you enjoy “summer” in Nigeria? I’d like to hear your experience(s).
