Howard University has rescinded the honorary degree bestowed on the controversial American rapper and music executive, Sean Combs, aka Diddy.
The university had come to this decision via a uniform vote by its Board of Trustees.
The news is coming amidst the backdrop of multiple sexual assault charges against Diddy and the surfacing of a video showing the rapper abusing his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, in a hotel. A behaviour that the university had deemed fundamentally incompatible with its core values and everything it stood for.
Diddy had been a former student at Howard and had dropped out after two years in 1990. After his rise to fame, the notable rapper received the honorary doctorate and served as commencement speaker in 2014.
What They’re Saying
The University Board had this to say;
“The Howard University Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to accept the return by Mr. Sean Combs of the honorary degree conferred upon him in 2014,” a university spokesperson told Fox on Friday.“This acceptance revokes all honors and privileges associated with the degree. Accordingly, the Board has directed that his name be removed from all documents listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.”
