Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has apologized after facing intense backlash over a viral video in which he appeared to confess to having slept with a 15-year-old girl—a claim that sparked widespread outrage and calls for legal scrutiny.
The controversial footage, which surfaced online earlier this week, featured the singer recalling a disturbing incident that he claimed happened ten years ago. Viewers across social media platforms condemned the remarks, demanding accountability.
However, in a follow-up video posted to his Instagram page on Wednesday, Speed Darlington claimed the confession was not real, but a publicity stunt meant to draw attention to his latest music release. He said the shocking story was part of a strategy to stay relevant in the entertainment space.
“To everyone angry about the video where I said I slept with a 15-year-old—I’m an artist, and controversy feeds the industry,” he said. “If you’re not trending, you’re not getting booked. That’s just how it works.”
He went on to explain that his new song contains explicit content, and he needed something provocative to promote it. “I don’t make gospel music. The clip was meant to push my release. Don’t take it more seriously than it was meant.”
The artist ended the video by apologizing to his fans and anyone who felt offended. “If you’re upset, that’s fine. I apologize,” he said.
