The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged the public to disregard reports alleging the death of its Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. The statement, issued by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, on Saturday, clarified that Yakubu is alive and well.
The clarification followed rumors circulating on social media that Yakubu had passed away in a London hospital. These claims reportedly began on Monday, 9th December 2024, prompting INEC to address the situation.
INEC Sets the Record Straight
“Our attention has been drawn to a fake news narrative circulated by a section of the social media claiming the purported death of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, at a London hospital,” the statement read. INEC emphasized that Yakubu has not traveled to London in two years and is in good health.
The statement highlighted Yakubu’s recent public appearances, including an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on 11th December and a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on 12th December. Both events were widely reported in the media.
A Recurring Issue
INEC also noted that similar rumors about the Chairman’s death were spread in 2021, describing the latest claims as a repeat of past falsehoods. “Those who indulge in this practice, as well as those who spread it, should be mindful of its effect not only on the individual but also the wider society,” the statement cautioned.
Addressing Misinformation
The statement reiterated INEC’s commitment to combating fake news in collaboration with credible media outlets. It urged the public to verify information before sharing it to avoid unnecessary panic or harm.
The Bottom Line
While rumors of this nature can spread quickly, INEC’s detailed response aims to reassure the public and dispel any lingering doubts. The Commission’s call for responsible information sharing highlights the broader challenge of tackling misinformation in today’s media landscape.
