The reason why INEC offices are being attacked is still a mystery to many people, as is the attack a bid to prevent citizens from collecting their voters’ card in order for them not to be able to vote, or is the attack a ploy from an opposition party to cheat in the Elections? All these are questions the Commissioner of police needs to answer, as the recent attacks on INEC offices in Imo state are appalling, collections of voters registration are going on smoothly in other states, but in Imo state it seems that there’s a hidden agenda by someone in the state to prevent Elections from holding in the state.
Yet again, the Independent Electoral Commission has complained about the attack launched in its office in Imo State.
This information was disclosed by Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner, and Chairman of, the Information and Voter Education Committee.
This is the fourth time in weeks that the INEC office has been attacked by hoodlums. The attack which was carried out on Tuesday by these Hoodlums led to the destruction of windows and burglary proof was detached from the building, what their purpose is, is still unknown to voters.
According to the statement by Festus, eight windows were destroyed but the hoodlums couldn’t gain access to the main building, so this kept all movable and immovable equipment safe. In order to keep some important materials such as ballot boxes and voting cubicles have been transferred to another INEC facility for safekeeping so that all uncollected permanent voters register. Security will henceforth be deployed to ensure that everyone is a to collect their voter card safely.
However, this incident has been reported to the police, for necessary investigations and Necessary arrests to be made.
The statement read “The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Imo State, Professor Sylvia Agu, has reported that our office in Isu Local Government Area office was attacked and vandalized. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 20th December 2022.
“Eight windows were smashed, and burglary proofs removed. Fortunately, the attackers could not access the building. Movable and immovable equipment as well as other materials were not removed or vandalized.
“However, as a precautionary measure, critical materials such as ballot boxes and voting cubicles have been evacuated to another INEC facility for safekeeping.
“Similarly, all uncollected PVCs have been secured while security will be deployed to ensure the continuous collection of the cards by registered voters in the same premises.
“The incident has been reported to the Police and other security agencies for necessary action.
“This is the fourth attack on INEC facilities in Imo State in less than three weeks following previous attacks on Orlu and Oru West Local Government Areas and the State Headquarters in Owerri.
Imo the state has been on the news for a while now, it’s as if the Hoodlums are there to vandalize every single Government property in the state. In that same Imo state, two courts were attacked, set on fire, and important documents were burnt. The Governor of the state should take immediate action to ensure that these Hoodlums are fished out for their hiding holes, as how will the next Elections be like I’m the state if there are constant attacks on the INEC offices in the state? The Commissioner of police of the federation should order that serious investigations he carried and tight Security be placed in all INEC offices.
