The Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has been evacuated from a port in Wakayama after a blast was heard, but he was later discovered to be unharmed in the incident.
According to several local media reports, a smoke bomb had been thrown but there were no immediate signs of wounds sustained or external damages at the scene.
A suspect has already been detained at the site in western Japan’s Wakayama where Kishida had been due to give a speech.
There has been no official confirmation of the incident, with the local authorities declining to comment.
Japan has since increased and strengthened its security after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was fatally shot while speaking at a campaign event in July 2022.
