Jennifer Lopez is done seeking love to complete herself. In an interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview, the songstress looked back at her painful breakup with Ben Affleck and how it brought her to a fuller understanding of herself. “There’s no new bar because I’m not looking for anybody,” she said, revealing she no longer sees a romantic partner as essential for happiness. It is something that took her 30 years to learn, but now she enjoys her independence.
Lopez’s year has been intense, marking the dissolution of her marriage, a canned stadium tour, and a starring role in the movie Unstoppable. And yet, she has absolutely no regrets. “It’s fucking mind-blowing what the human spirit can overcome,” she said, acknowledging that the struggles were needed for her growth. She joked that God had to “hit [her] with a sledgehammer” in order for her to understand the lessons life was throwing at her.
Further back, Lopez shared how she had sought validation from other people and accepted less than she deserved in relationships growing up. “I’m telling that little girl who grew up in the Bronx, ‘You’ve done really good for yourself,'” she said, finally proud of her journey.
But while canceling her tour devastated her, Lopez said she knew it was the right thing to do, putting her own well-being first. The time off has allowed her to dig deep, heal, and come out even stronger. And for the fans champing at the bit to get her back? She promises, “I’ll be out there entertaining you and shaking my ass sooner than you know.”
