Kim Kardashian has spoken openly about her marriage to rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West, describing their relationship as at times “toxic” and admitting that she often felt unsafe.
In a recent episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kardashian, who was married to West for nearly seven years, explained that the relationship suffered from a “lack of stability,” which affected her emotionally and financially.
“There was just a lot of things that I wouldn’t deal with,” she said, recalling the difficulties she faced during their marriage.
She added, “I didn’t like the feeling of… someone talking bad about my kids’ grandmother, aunts,” referencing her mother Kris Jenner and her sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie. “If someone feels that way, then, you know, we shouldn’t be together.”
Kardashian and West tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in Italy in 2014, but the marriage ended in 2021 when she filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Reflecting on the later years of the relationship, she said, “I remember just not feeling safe, not even physically — just like maybe emotionally or even, you know, financially.”
She recounted the unpredictability of West, who has publicly discussed his bipolar disorder and later autism, saying, “I didn’t know… what you’re going to get when you wake up. And that’s like a really unsettling feeling.” She also revealed that at one point, West gave away the couple’s five Lamborghinis during a mental health episode.
“Lack of stability was a big thing,” Kardashian said, explaining that she initially tried to be supportive. “I think when someone has like their first like mental break, you want to be super supportive… but when someone isn’t willing to make changes that I think would be super healthy and beneficial, it makes it really hard to continue on in a relationship that can be toxic.”
She added that deciding to end the marriage was especially challenging because of their four children — North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
“You really have to take your time and wait and see if there’ll be changes,” Kardashian said. “But once you get to a place where you feel like it’s not going to change or get better, then you have to make… some serious choices on what you’re going to do. And that’s like a really hard reality to face, you know?”
