Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has gone back at ex-United midfielder Nemanj Matic after the latter hit the former with a brutal claim ahead of the Red Devils’ Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon.
Matic, now with Lyon, called Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history” after the Cameroonian said United are “way better” than their French opponents. Although United currently sits at 13th in the Premier League and Lyon are chasing second in Ligue 1, Onana sounded confident of progress in Europe.
If David de Gea or Peter Schmeichel said that, then I will doubt myself. But if you are statistically one of the worst keepers in United’s modern history, you need to show before you talk.”
Onana responded on social media soon and defended his comments and took a subtle dig back: “I would never disrespect another club. We know it’s going to be a difficult game. But at least I have lifted trophies at the biggest club in the world — some people can’t say the same.”
Onana, whose inconsistent displays since being signed to replace De Gea have been under scrutiny, now has added incentive to perform against Matic’s Lyon in a high-stakes Europa League tie.
