Manchester United have reportedly been in advanced talks with Ruben Amorim to become their next manager after sacking Erik ten Hag on Monday following a disappointing start to the season. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed interim manager as the club searches for a permanent replacement.
The 39-year-old has become one of the most highly regarded young managers in Europe, having risen to prominence after making his name at Sporting Lisbon. Sky Sports and The Athletic are among those to report that Amorim is on the cusp of putting pen to paper on a deal to become United boss after the two parties successfully negotiated an agreement.
The Portuguese coach has been linked to some of the most high-profile roles, such as the Liverpool job following the departure of German tactician Jurgen Klopp, but Dutchman Arne Slot came through the door. Amorim has also been in talks over replacing David Moyes at West Ham earlier this year before later apologizing for the timing.
Among the successes of Amorim at Sporting include an end to a 19-year wait for a league title in 2021 and another last season. Confirmed at Old Trafford, he will be expected to turn things around in a team lying 14th in the Premier League on the back of a 2-1 defeat to West Ham, their fourth in nine league games.
